Country codes
Various country code lists have been developed by different organizations and can be confusing if you exchange information worldwide. ISO 3166 is the commonly accepted International Standard, however, it does not fully meet the needs of family historians. Suitable alternatives include the Chapman Codes but some of these codes are also used by the International Standard. The Chapman Codes were devised by Colin Chapman and relate to pre 1974 UK counties. To establish uniformity users are encouraged to print the codes in upper case as is the format of the International Standard.
The New Zealand Society of Genealogists World Codes displayed here generally conforms to the recognised international standards of ISO3166 but have been adapted to suit our requirements.  Download list of Country Codes
