| NZSG Irish Interest Group |
About Us As our name suggests we are a group of family historians (genealogists) with a common interest in researching our Irish ancestry. We meet together regularly to:
• Share our knowledge • Pool our resources • Learn from one another • Enjoy the company and camaraderie of fellow genealogists
Our aim is to assist you in the pursuit of your Irish forbears. Our meetings are relaxed, informal and friendly – much like our members! We even provide tea and coffee.
Whether you are a complete novice to genealogy or an experienced researcher, we believe we have something to offer and interest you. We acknowledge that everyone has their own research style and pace – some like to be left alone to browse the resources on display, others like a helping hand and some guidance. Whatever your style, you are most welcome to join us.
What we are not We are not professional genealogists and we do not undertake paid research. Nor will we trace your family history for you. We are happy to share our knowledge and expertise with you but we wouldn’t want to deprive you of the pleasure of discovering an elusive ancestor for yourself.
Where and when we meet We meet five times per year on the second Sunday of March, May, July, September and November. Meetings are held from 1 – 4 pm at the NZSG Family Research Centre, 1st floor, 159 Queens Road, Panmure, Auckland.
The remaining meetings for 2007 are as follows:
1 - 4pm, Sunday 8 July 2007 1 - 4pm, Sunday 9 September 2007 1 - 4pm, Sunday 11 November 2007
NEWSFLASH !!! - Special Meeting In addition to our regular meetings we occasionally hold special “one off” meetings. One such event to mark in your diaries is a talk on Irish emigration by well known American genealogist Anne Rodda on Sunday 7th October from 1-4pm at NZSG Family Research Centre, 1st floor, 159 Queens Road, Panmure, Auckland. Anne is a certified genealogist specialising in Irish research in America and the west of Ireland. She lives in New Jersey and has a special interest in the Irish in areas in and around New York. Anne is to host a question and answer session after her talk so now is your opportunity to dig out the research on your Irish ancestors who went to America and take advantage of Anne’s extensive knowledge of this topic. The door fee for this special event is $5 per person.
Publications The IIG has produced a number of practical “how to” research guides crammed full of information, describing various Irish records and indicating where they can be ordered on microfilm to any LDS authorised agency (e.g. LDS Family History Centres, NZSG Family Research Centre, Auckland City Library, National Library). Websites and film numbers are included where possible. For a complete list of available publications click on the following link: Irish Interest Group Publications list
E-mail subscription newsletter Send an email request to irishinterestgroup@yahoo.co.nz asking to be added to our mailing list and we will send you all the latest Irish Interest Group news, directly to your ‘inbox’. Like all organisations within New Zealand we are bound by the Privacy Act 1993 and we undertake not to release any of your personal details to any third party (except as required by law) without your express consent.
Speakers available As part of our commitment to helping others with their Irish family history research we welcome invitations from NZSG Branches and other groups with Irish interests, to come and speak at their meetings. Topics covered can be tailored to suit the needs and interests of the groups concerned and we take as many of our resources to these meetings as is practicable.
Workshops The Irish Interest Group periodically holds workshops addressing specific topics relevant to Irish genealogical research. The number of attendees is restricted so everyone derives the greatest benefit from the available resources and the workshop is facilitated by members of the IIG committee who are all experienced researchers.
Costs There is no joining or membership fee to belong to the Irish Interest Group. We do ask for a $3 donation at the door for our meetings and this is just to help cover the cost of room hire.
