From
1st September, visiting the FRC will allow you greater flexibility. Opening hours
will be 10am - 4pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and the fourth
Sunday of each month.
You can arrive anytime between 10am and 4pm
and stay for a short time, or as much time as you wish between those hours. The
new daily entry fee is $5 for members and $20 for non-members.
Wednesday evening session from 4pm – 8pm
remains at $3 entry fee, but on the first Friday of the month when it is open
later from 4pm -10pm the fee is $5. Please note: we remain closed on Tuesdays. Click here for full details.
POSTAL BORROWING COSTS HALVED FOR MEMBERS! Fantastic news – from
1st October onwards, NZSG will fund the outwards cost of postal borrowing. This means
that members can borrow from the library and only need to pay for the return
postage – you DO NOT need to reimburse the outward postage with stamps. Click here for more details about postal borrowing.
NEW LOYALTY CARD AT THE FAMILY RESEARCH CENTRE
September saw the launch of a new loyalty card. Everytime you pay an entry into the FRC, you get a stamp. After 9 stamps you get a free entry into the FRC for a daily or evening session.
The library catalogue system is up and running.
First-time users instructions: - Log on and off the main NZSG website. This will synchronise the two systems and update the library system with your login and password. This process is uypdated nightly at 2am. You only need to do this once. Note: you can log straight back on to the NZSG website if you wish
- Ensure you have waited a suitable length of time before attempting to log on to the library catalogue. Remember you only need to do this once. Once the library system recognised your membership details, you can log straight on to the library catalogue at any time.
- Click on My Library, Login as and enter your membership number and password
- Please ignore the bottom menu option 'login as...' - this is not for members to use.
On-going instructions
- You can go the library catalogue without being logged on to the main NZSG website
- If you are logged on to the main NZSG webiste, you will not automatically be logged on to the library catalogue. These are two separate systems and the library catalogue is open to non-members, so if you wish to use the members-only features you will need to log on to the library catalogue.
Some of the highlights:
- Powerful searching including drop-down lists of subject headings and keywords
- Search results can be sorted, printed and saved to PDF
- New visual search buttons
- Records can have cover images to making recognition easy
- Sourcing citations – citations can be printed, or copied and pasted
- Borrowing and reserving – library items can be booked for borrowed and also reserved if already out by another library user
- Reviews – members can write their own reviews about library items
- Renewing an item – members can renew an item for a further 3 weeks if they haven’t finished with it
- Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) - members can be advised by email when items are accessioned that match subjects of their choice

When is the library open?
The Library is open 5 days a week and there any many additional special openings during the year - especially over the long annual Summer Holiday period. Volunteers provide an invaluable service in the Library. Check full details of Library Session Times.
What tasks does a volunteer do?
- Welcoming and processing researchers at Reception
- Using the till to pay for Library Services and sales
- Assisting researchers in the Library
- Issuing resources to members
- Returning resources into the Library
- Completing tasks as designated by the Team Leader of the Session
- Will there be training?
