COVID-19 Updates

On this page we will try and keep you updated on any cancellations and closures of NZSG branches and other genealogy organisations. Any branches that are cancelling their meetings or closing their libraries are asked to email so we can keep this page updated.

On 21 March 2020 the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made a statement to the nation about the impact of COVID-19 on New Zealand. The government has announced a four-level Covid-19 alert system.  We are now in Level 2 of the four-level COVID-10 alert system.


Family Research Centre, Panmure

Our Family Research Centre will be opening to visitors from 8 June Monday-Friday from 10am to 4pm. See the latest e-KIT for more information about restrictions.


South Canterbury Branch

April, May and possibly June meetings have been cancelled. Sunday roster at the South Canterbury museum has been cancelled until further notice but any enquiries can be sent to our email. The Transcription project held at the South Canterbury museum is also cancelled.


Wellington Branch

April and May meetings have been cancelled.


South Waikato Branch

Putaruru Cemetery Walk, Library DNA meetings and April branch meeting are all cancelled.


Far North Branch

The Saturday Workshop is cancelled, and will be re-assessing the situation with Workshops after the one-month lockdown.


New Plymouth Branch

The New Plymouth Branch library is closed until further notice. All Branch meetings are cancelled until further notice. This includes computer group and Legacy classes.


Auckland DNA Users Group

All meetings cancelled until further notice.


Waitakere Branch

All meetings or committee assistance in research events are cancelled until further notice.

Gary and John are getting familiar with a virtual meeting online application called ZOOM. This allows them to be face-to-face, either one-on-one or in groups using our computers. The app works very well and does allow them to screen share to demonstrate solutions or assist with research. It is desirable, but not essential for you to have a webcam and microphone & speakers on your computer. If necessary you can get by with a microphone equipped headset. You can put a research problem to us, we research it, and share our screen with you to show our results and discuss them with you.

Warkworth Branch

All meetings are cancelled until further notice.


Nelson Branch

All meetings are cancelled and the Ancestors Attic Library is closed until further notice.


Papakura Branch

In light of recent developments and announcements, the committee have decided, reluctantly, to close the house, 11 Opaheke Road, until further notice for research, meetings, Legacy sessions etc. This will include the Legacy session on 25th March and the branch meetings scheduled for 7th April.

The committee will send out an email when we are likely to reopen, possibly after Easter.

Kilbirnie Branch

April and May activities have been cancelled. This includes the monthly meetings on 2 April and 7 May, as well as the research mornings scheduled for 15 April and 20 May. A decision will be made later about the AGM scheduled for 4 June.


Hawke's Bay Branch

All meetings scheduled in May 2020  have been postponed. A decision about the June meetings will be made nearer the time.


Bay of Islands Branch

Meetings are cancelled until further notice.


Otaki Branch

The Otaki Genealogy committee has decided to cancel or postpone several upcoming events

  • The branch meeting on Thursday, 26 March has been cancelled. Our speaker, Jonathan Newport, will be rebooked later in the year when things settle down.
  • The trip to Wellington City Archives on Wednesday April 15th will be postponed to later in the year.
  • The Easter raffle has been cancelled and we will aim to have it at the end of the year.


Canterbury Branch

As from 20 March 2020 all meetings and library openings are cancelled until further notice.


North Shore Branch

Both April meetings have been cancelled. A decision on future meetings will be continually reviewed and advised as and when the situation concerning the virus is clearer.


National Library of New Zealand

The National Library is temporarily suspending some activities until 31 May 2020 to protect against the risk of the spread of COVID-19.

The following activities will be suspended:

  • Events (meetings, workshops, talks, conferences, performances etc.) held in our spaces
  • Tours, including school tours and He Tohu Tāmaki
  • Public programmes

Currently, reading rooms, exhibitions, cafe, and shop remain open. He Matapihi pop-up library is open, however Nga Taonga Sound and Vision Reading Room has now closed. As this is a changing environment, please see the National Library website for up-to-date information.
